Key Points:

  • Dehydration can increase your risk of developing another stone

  • Drinking plenty of water, making healthier food choices and daily exercise can help lower your risk of developing another kidney stone

If you’re reading this, chances are you have experienced the pain and discomfort associated with a kidney stone. Definitely not an experience you’d like to repeat. Did you know that fifty percent of kidney stone sufferers will get another stone within one to five years? That’s right, half of you will get another stone. There are a few things you can do to lower the chance of that happening.

The easiest way to improve your odds of not getting another kidney stone is to drink plenty of clean filtered water. How much is enough? Well, the suggested daily amount is half your body weight in ounces. That’s about 12-15 cups of water a day. As much as a pain as that can seem, it’s nothing compared to the pain of getting another kidney stone. It’s also a good idea to avoid sports drinks and energy drinks and while you’re at it, limit your caffeine intake. All these drinks can contribute to dehydration which can contribute to stone formation.

In addition to drinking plenty of water, what you eat is also important in reducing your risk of getting another stone. Try to limit your consumption of sugary foods and high fructose drinks. Limiting the amount of animal protein and increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables will also help. Lastly, reduce excess salt in your diet by decreasing salty snacks, processed meats and pre-packaged meals. Excess salt can increase your risk of developing another kidney stone. And you knew it was coming, regular exercise can also lower your chance of getting another stone.

To further decrease the chance of getting another kidney stone, limit your vitamin C supplementation to less than 500mg per day. Excess vitamin C supplementation has been linked to an increase in kidney stone formation. On the other hand, some supplements have been shown to decrease the risk of stone formation. They include but are not limited to: magnesium citrate and potassium citrate, phytic acid, calcium, vitamin B 6, vitamin E, and catechins (found in green tea and green tea extract). Always check with your healthcare provider before taking any supplements.

With that in mind, Prevastone™ has formulated C-ERO®...a vitamin C free multivitamin designed by physicians. C-ERO® provides just the right nutrients in the amounts needed to compliment your healthy food choices while removing certain others, like vitamin C…so you don’t get too much of a good thing.
